From the time I was born in my Grandmother's Rest Home, I knew I wanted to be a nurse. When I got into RN training, all other nursing could not hold a candle to the way I felt about OB. Even then, probably because of my Grandmother, who served the elderly with dignity, I knew there was a different and better way than was being offered in the hospitals of the 50's. When I had the opportunity in 1957 and 1959 to have my children by hypnosis I grabbed at it. Ever since I have striven to make the birthing experience beautiful, peaceful and free of fear.
My desk plaque, a gift from my husband when I graduated from London and Booth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, says: RN Mother CNM. I tell people that is the order I received those honors. When I heard about Frontier Nursing Service ,in 1955 in Kentucky, I wanted to go there and learn midwifery at my graduation from RN school in 1956. But after having four years of school, meeting and being courted by my present husband for three years and not wanting to open another book, decided to get married, move to Wisconsin, and raise a family, instead of six months at Frontier Nursing Service. In 1976, just after a move to California, I met a doctor who was doing home, office and hospital births. After working with him, and doing some lay midwifery for four years, went to London, England, to get my SCM training. To complete my CNM work, test, I came back to Booth Maternity Hospital, in Philadelphia. I practiced in California, for three years, then moved to Montana to get out of the city and to get doctors who appreciated midwives. I've been in private practice here in Montana for 14 years and LOVE IT!!!!!
I perform my service where ever the mother and her family are comfortable, as long as it is within 30 minutes of an accepting hospital. We have two in my area of South-Western Montana. It take 30-45 minutes to set up for a C-Section, and they will do that with a phone call from me. That makes the time safety factor the same if I'm home or in the hospital to get help in the way of a C-Section. I do not have hospital delivery privileges, but will go with clients if they choose or need a hospital experience, as their advocate. Most clients choose their own home, but if that is not suitable, or too far away, I have a trailer next to a creek that has a private bedroom for birthing and can sleep eight. I also have a local lodge and also a KOA with cute private log cabins, who not only welcome birth but water births as well. I've also had some births in local motels who welcome us with open arms. (Especially since they know I won't leave them with any kind of a mess!!)
Over the years I have attended approximately 4500 births and have attended the labors of at least five times that many women, but find that I am still learning, for everyone is so wonderfully unique and different. I love that part of midwifery too.
I welcome any questions from women who would like a second opinion, or third. My big mouth has gotten me in lots of 'trouble' when I refused to tell anything but what I feel to be the honest, commonsense truth--so bring on the questions!!
